Continued: SharePoint vs File Server

Early this week I did a post on the difference between a file server and SharePoint. I just ran across a post by Joel Oleson that explains at length what not to store in SharePoint. It is a nice, thoughtful list and worth taking a long look.

Here are some things I took away with me.

  1. You can store any type of files on SharePoint as long as the files are each smaller than 2GB hard limit and 50MB by default
  2. File types scenarios that do not work well: Linked Files and Documents
  3. Storing movies or streaming content is better served on media servers
  4. Limitations
    • File names cannot exceed 128 characters in length
    • Filename + folder structure + site structure + hostname should not exceed 260
  5. Recommendation: Limit depth to about 4 sites at a near max

I’ve run into to the 260 character limit a couple of times and have seen the other limitation around somewhere, but to have it all in one post is a nice resource.

Do you know what happens when the file length or weblink is exceeded? I have a few users who insist in using names way to long and get unexpected results. I am not sure if this is causing thier issues, but can’t seem to find the answers to thier issues.
