Site Planning Worksheets: Over 800 Downloaded

Last week’s newsletter contained a download for a set of site planning worksheets. There were over 800 downloads! With that kind of response, I’m planning on an online workshop to walk people through the worksheet and get them setup with their site architecture. Leave me a quick note in the comments if that type of workshop is of interest to you.

For those who subscribed after the newsletter went out last week, this week’s newsletter has a link to all of the archived content from the previous newsletters, including the Quote of the Day web part and the Site Planning Worksheets.

The Weekly Newsletter goes out on Wednesday.

    Some thoughts for additional topics:
    1. Feature activation-which ones are needed, mostly a MOSS issue, but some relevance to WSS
    2. Workflows-will the MOSS Out-of-the-box be adequate or will SPD be needed?
    3. User Analysis – should not be person or group, these need to be separate so that you can identify Who will be in each Group
    4. Permission Levels- default ok, or custom levels needed
    5. Templates-which template should be used when the Site Collection is created,
    6. Additional templates-which of the fabulous 40 templates are needed?

  3. Dean – Thanks for the input on the worksheet. I assume you mean ‘columns’ when using the word ‘topics’.

    Let’s go step-by-step:

    1) Feature activation: These are generic worksheets for beginning site architects. I don’t think ‘features’ are a relevant part to setting up the information architecture at the level we’re talking about. That’s up for discussion, but I think if you do a search on this site or Stump the Panel, there are virtually no requests for help with features. It’s not a topic beginning site designers are thinking about.

    2) Workflows – Are you saying the column for workflows isn’t adequate? It’s an open text field, so anything can be typed in.

    3) User Analysis – You are correct. It might be that a new worksheet is added to define who will be in a group. However, the purpose of the worksheet is to get people thinking, not overwhelm them at the very beginning. Maybe this is an ancillary sheet… let me think about that one.

    4) Permission Levels – There is already a column for those. Not sure what you are asking for.

    5) Templates – You are correct, there is no request specifically for a site collection template.

    6) Additional Templates – Not sure why those can’t be typed in when a site template is requested.

Again, thanks for the input. I am always updating the worksheet based upon user feedback, so you’ll see some of the changes you requested within the next version.

    Regards,
    Mark

I would definitely be interested in participating in your proposed Site Planning workshop. Thank you!

  6. Lori Shandor says:

On the Site Planning Worksheet, I noticed on the “Discussion Board Specifications” tab that the comment on the column named “Site” reads “Using the Site Map Worksheet”. Can you tell me where I would find that worksheet? Thanks so much

  7. Lori – That’s a residual holdover from Version 1 that should be deleted. Thanks for the catch. — Mark
