Problems with ‘Edit in Datasheet’ with WSS

Tip o’ the hat to Paul Ruston of LinkSoftware in the UK for this:

“One of the features that can be sorely missed when using WSS is the ‘Edit in Datasheet’ if the client doesn’t have Office installed. Telling the client they are going to have to purchase x number licenses is not really an option. I found that this becomes available if you install the Access-Runtime on the client which is free of charge from Microsoft.” — Paul

  1. Paul – Very nice. Could you point us to the download from MS and then explain how to install it? Thanks – Mark

    Do you mean this download?

Microsoft Office Access 2007 provides a rich platform for developing database management solutions with easy-to-use customization tools. If no end-user customization is required (including report modifications), you can choose to distribute those Access 2007 solutions so that they run without requiring a full installation of Access 2007. To do so, you must package and distribute your application with the Access 2007 Runtime.

The Access 2007 Runtime is similar to previous runtimes in that all design-related UI is either removed or disabled.

You do not need to buy any special SKU in order to redistribute the Access 2007 Runtime. You can freely redistribute it or point users to this download.

That’s the one. Straight forward download and install on the client machine.

Found an interesting article yesterday when the above failed to work. I have been using FireFox as my browser recently and the Edit in Datasheet did not work. Apparently it only works in IE6 or later.
