What is Social Bookmarking and why should I care?

Social BookmarksAt the bottom of each article at EndUserSharePoint.com, there are some funky little icons. What are they for? Why would a post be called ‘delicious’ worthy? What’s all this talk about ‘digg’-ing a post? How do people ‘StumbleUpon’ my site? What in the world am I talking about?

Check out this 3 minute screencast from CommonCraft. No GeekSpeak, just plain English on Social Bookmarking, then come back and tell me why you should consider this post ‘delicious’ worthy.

Didn’t this Plain English guy do a guide to Zombies too? That was funny.

The Social part is great, but even on a personal level, it’s terrific. I couldn’t live without out it. I can go to any machine anywhere and as long as it’s connected to the internet, I can my bookmarks.

I think there are some potential privacy issues. You can mark a site as “don’t share this”, but what if yuo forget? It could be a problem as even a URL to an internal server could be a enough information for a hacker to cause mischief.

Second, those URLs belong on some server in the cloud. What happens if it dies and their disaster recovery solution isn’t up to snuff.

At this point, losing my delicious.com bookmarks would be almost worse than losing my wallet!
