Everything I Know About SharePoint I Learned In Kindergarten – pt1

My daughter started Kindergarten this year.  Her school and her teacher’s educational philosophy differ greatly from my early school experience.  However, many of the lessons I learned helped shape the type of IT worker I became.

If you finish your work, talk.

When I was five, talking while others worked earned me bad marks and report card comments like, “Paul has no problems doing his work but talks too much and this prevents others from doing their work.”  I’m very happy to report that times have changed.  My daughter’s school encourages children to verbalize their thought processes and experiences.  Instead of passing along my genetic predisposition for getting into trouble, my double-helix proteins helped make her a classroom leader.

Despite Miss Brown’s scoldings and notes home, I frequently talked during work periods.  When I share what I learn with others, I often gain additional insights, new ideas, and a better appreciation for knowledge.

SharePoint, as a collaboration tool, supports the exchange of ideas and can even inspire it.  Allow workers to break away from “old school” thinking and communicate.
