Import Contacts into SharePoint

A note from Mark Miller: This article was sent in by Jason Rendel, a frequent reader of EndUserSharePoint.com. If you’ve got a special tip, let me know. — Mark

In Office 2007 you can synchronize the list with your contacts. Unfortunately we don’t have Office 2007 so it is a bit trickier.

In Outlook, navigate to the contacts list:

  • File
  • Import and Export
  • Proceed to export contacts to a spreadsheet
  • Make note of where the file is saved, the default is you’re “My Documents” folder
  • In SharePoint from your contacts page:

  • Select Actions -> Edit in Datasheet
  • Ensure that there is at least one row in the list
  • Click and drag the auto fill on a cell down to create enough rows for your contacts In Excel:
  • Open the worksheet you exported earlier
  • Select the row values from a column for all contacts
  • Copy In SharePoint:
  • Right Click in the first cell in the datasheet
  • Paste
  • Proceed to bulk import data. You may be able to work on multiple columns at one time but this depends on how similar your spreadsheet and list are.

    1. I have been trying for months to copy around 2500 contact addresses from Outlook 2007 to the contact of SharePoint Server 2007, by drap and drop.
At >95% of the action, MS Outlook crashes. Then the copied contact adresses start to duplicate on SharePoint. If I don’t delete them, they will be around 5000 addresses in few days.
      Have you any idea?
      Regards,
      Don
