6 Minute Screencast: Data View Web Part – Add a Hyperlink to a Field

This screencast is a supplement to Laura Roger’s article, Data View Web Part, The Basics – Add a Hyperlink. As a side note, I don’t know why her face is green… maybe it has something to do with the new Star Trek movie that just opened. Where’s Kirk when you need him?

Thanks ! Another gem from EUSP — that you won’t find in clear English anywhere else.

  2. Claudio says:

Thanks Laura! Not sure why have you used the “Title” column in the example for lists, that can point to the item OOB. I guess you can use this approach for custom lists where for whatever reason you avoid using the title column, right?

  3. Laura Rogers says:

    Claudio,
I haven’t gone over the “whys” of using data view web parts yet. You’re right, if you’re using a regular list view, the title column is already a link. But, if you just happen to be using a data view web part to display your list, the title column will not automatically be a link. When you sign up for my workshops, you’ll learn about reasons people use this web part, and specific business cases and examples.

Nice one Laura. Mark: I think you only get that green tinge only comes up if you are a bit of a greenhorn with SPD – it happened on my PC too!

  5. Niche says:

An easier method of linking List items to its display form would be to right click on the item, Format As, Hyperlink To, Display Form…

Excellent screencast. Will try the suggestion from Niche too.

    thank you.
