3 Minute Screencast: Merging SharePoint Document Libraries

In my experience participating in SharePoint discussion boards, I noticed that people frequently ask how documents from multiple libraries can be displayed together.

In the screencast below, I show the basic concept behind merging data sources. The goal is to display documents from several libraries on a site, all in one list.

Data view web part to the rescue again!

The supporting document is a blog I wrote a few months ago, called Ways to Display Multiple Document Libraries. My blog post goes over three ways, and this screencast demonstrates one of them. If you are interested in the different uses of the Data View Web Part, register to receive an announcement of my next, live online session.

Thanks a billion Laura! I’ve been trying to get a “last updated documents” with document library info to work for ages (on and off) and now I got it. Just have to figure out how to make this webpart work in other sites as well. It apparently works only on the site I’ve created the webpart in. Ideas?

good information. how about merging custom lists into one?

Is it possible to show contents(like a list collecting contents from different lists) from different subsites, even if the user has permissions only to one of them and to the site where the merged content is shown?

I got what I wanted using web services. Thanks.

Hi Laura, This works nicely! I just have a question that I’ve been trying to figure out for the longest. Is there an alerts feature so users can set up in this data view.

    Thanks!

Hi Laura. Nice post. How would this work out if you have folders in document libraries? Is there any functionality to drill down?
