Add instant IM to your SharePoint site… no code required.

Guest Author: Chris Quick

I was playing with Meebo (www.meebo.com) and discovered that I can set up instant messaging from SharePoint to my Meebo account.

Here are the steps:

1) Create a meebo account a www.meebo.com
2) After your account is created, click on preferences > meebo me widgets
3) Click Add New Widget
4) Give it a name and select a size (super-size works well in the default team site)
5) Click Create
6) Click on the Widget Embed and copy all of the text (ctrl-c or right-click copy)

Now, for the sharepoint side

1) Edit the page in Sharepoint and choose to add a Content Editor Web Part
2) Choose to edit the content of the webpart by clicking on the provided link in the web-part
3) Click on Source Editor…
4) Paste the provided code from Meebo
5) Click save and the widget should load

You can now chat with guests to your team site (and those guests can chat with you).

Chris

You can also add Windows Live Messenger into your SharePoint page without any code.

If you’re in an enterprise that uses Live Communications server, you don’t need any third party tools or custom code. Just use the out-of-box web part called “Site users”.

Only problem is that when you put such an IM part on your blog, people might comment less and prefer to use the IM part instead. A pity from a sharing standpoint.
