The Data view is defined with XML, which is just plain text. Download my example web part and open it in notepad, and you will see what is involved. There is also an "XML" web part you can add to your pages through the web UI. This is essentially the data view, but you define separately the source data location and the XSL used to render it. Is there ANY WAY to work with this stuff without those tools -- even if it has one doing the work the hard way in a good text editor tool. Yes, I know it would take longer and would be harder. But CAN IT BE DONE??? I'm so frustrated looking at these great ideas -- and I cannot do a SINGLE one of them. And Ian -- thanks for the mashup! Very detailed and great screen shots. The flexibility of the DVWP never ceases to amaze me. I've used query string input params before, they are very handy. It's nice for the DispForm.aspx and EditForm.aspx to add a 2nd or 3rd display from another list too. Excellent post Woody! Very detailed and great screen shots.
