Real World SharePoint 2010 Installation by Chris Quick

Chris QuickUnless you’ve been asleep for the past 24 hours, you already know that the beta for SharePoint 2010 was released on Monday. Not only that, but all of the Office Public Betas launched on MSDN: Visio/Office/Project/Project Server/SharePoint/SP Designer.

Chris Quick has volunteered to document every step of his SharePoint 2010 beta installation. I’ve setup a live blogging panel so that you can follow along as he is going through the process. You will be able to ask Chris questions along the way. When he has time, he’ll respond in-line. He will start the installation at 8:30am CST, (that’s Texas time for those of you who don’t know).

I think this will be interesting to follow. I’ve never tried logging and publishing documentation in realtime.

Update: Chris has finished with our little experiment and it was a HUGE success. We had 105 people view the live documentation process. A little note for viewing the archives: clicking on screenshots within the screen will open a new window with a full size version of the image. Nicely done, Chris. Thanks.

Thank you for everyone that attended this event! Please feel free to follow me on twitter if you have questions or comments: http://twitter.com/cquick.

  2. Chris, thank you! Over 100 people logged in to watch. I think this might be a new way to actually document a project in realtime. I look forward to other ideas on how we might use the live blogging platform. — Mark

In the blog above, I show the create content screen. This screen is a good example of how SharePoint 2010 makes use of new technologies without breaking existing functionality. Without Silverlight installed, a standard web page is loaded that allows you to select the type of content to create. However; when Silverlight is installed, you will see the new and improved create dialog that is powered by Silverlight.
