What I found pretty quickly was if I wanted to customized Web Parts, create Data Views, etc.. "copy this code" became a real disadvantage without even the most cursory understanding of what the code was saying. You may not need to know how to write code in order to progress beyond out of the box web parts, but you do need to know how to read it. I spent some time getting basically grounded in HTML, CSS, Javascript/jQuery, and now I am doing the same with XML and XSL and a bit of C#. Even getting my feet wet in these languages has helped me immensely in getting the most out of the content I find on EUSP. I read a white paper on "Middle Tier Development" by Marc and it really hit home. I would love to see EUSP develop a track with that explicit goal--to attain these middle tier development skills for SharePoint. (For those who have that option, obviously). Thanks much and I wish I could have applied all these solutions sooner! I am just glad to still have them as a resource. It would be very helpful to know how a major redesign is done. Gut feeling tells me that it's coming sooner than I might want it. Knowing I can find that information here at EUSP is a comforting thought indeed! I like that idea Dean! It would be very helpful to know how a major redesign is done. While I have yet to implement any of the solutions I have read about, it has encouraged me to see what can be done and the possibilities are indeed endless! When your website content grows (as EndUserSharePoint.com has) and begins to encompass all aspects of what SharePoint can do, it is no surprise that reorganization of information will need to be addressed. Embracing that fact AND involving your users in that change will only multiply the usability of your site as well as solidify the loyalty of those of us who have been growing along with you. Thank you for considering us in the process. May I ask that you also include us on your SharePoint 2010 migration? Documentation on the process you used and what "surprises" popped up in the process would be extremely helpful and greatly appreciated. I am a more recent follower of your site and it’s content. During on of those dreams I refered to a "silo" on EUSP which i called the KISS section for Keep It SImple SharePoint. In this section new users, and those who have had sharepoint dumped in their laps without any idea what to do or where to start., could go to get instruction on how to set up and use a list, library, workspace, ect. I am not sure if I need to cut back on the coffee, or just get some sleep, but I thought you might get a grin out of it. lol OK I have been working on a big sharepoint project lately, and I am starting to even dream about sharepoint. Virden Thu, 20 May 2010 13:15:49 +0000 http://www.endusersharepoint.com/?p=7800#comment-69269 For a year or more now I've said to those willing to listen that the biggest complaint I've heard from people newly exposed to SharePoint was "but what would I do with it". The training that I typically see provided reminds me of people being taught the names and functions of the items in a kitchen. This is a stove,a blender, a food processor, a mixer, a beater, a frying pan - but without introducing the idea of planning a menu, selecting ingredients, and teaching how to saute, broil, poach, set a table, present the food on the plate, etc. For a year or more now I’ve said to those willing to listen that the biggest complaint I’ve heard from people newly exposed to SharePoint was “but what would I do with it”.
