Then edit the link and change the link to your "file ://" link - I don't know why this works, but it has worked for me in the past. This is how I have linked to documents residing in file shares in the past.
hrussell on ""Link to a Document" content type" http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/topic/link-to-a-document-content-type#post-5437 Fri, 27 Mar 2009 09:18:30 +0000 hrussell 5437@http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/
We have times when we don't want documents stored in sharepoint - restricted file types, for example, or very large data-set types of files. From the user's perspective, they'd like them all grouped together visually. Thoughts on creating a link to a file stored in a fileshare? Is there a way to make a content type that's like "Link to a Document" that will accept a file:// prefix?
eric on ""Link to a Document" content type" http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/topic/link-to-a-document-content-type#post-5388 Thu, 26 Mar 2009 08:27:53 +0000 eric 5388@http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/
Seems strange to link to a file in a document library. What is preventing him from uploading the document to the library and having metadat in place that links them together?

Or have the linked to files in a hidden document library as an "attachments" library. Upload the files here, then put the URL to the file in the link to a document field.
dlgross on ""Link to a Document" content type" http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/topic/link-to-a-document-content-type#post-5376 Wed, 25 Mar 2009 17:56:55 +0000 dlgross 5376@http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/
If you add the page viewer web part to the page above the doc library, you can have it point to a file share. however, this will display all of the folders and docs instead of just one file
HTH
Dean
hrussell on ""Link to a Document" content type" http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/topic/link-to-a-document-content-type#post-5352 Tue, 24 Mar 2009 14:36:07 +0000 hrussell 5352@http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/
We've recently discovered the "Link to a Document" content type and love it. It provides a workaround to the question folks always have -- how do I add links to a document library?

I loved it until we reached it's limit - apparently you can only link to "http" links. We have a user here who would like to include "file://" links in his document library. Any ideas how to do this?
