I'm currently tring to figure this out too. I don't think there is an easier method than what you describe without installing, at the very least, the ODBC drivers from Oracle client. On top of that, it would be good to have Single Sign On service configured so you don't have to store credentials unencrypted in the page itself.
jaxkookie on "SharePoint database connection to oracle" http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/topic/sharepoint-database-connection-to-oracle#post-6078 Wed, 22 Apr 2009 21:32:59 +0000 jaxkookie 6078@http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/
I am sorry I may have miscommunicated. What I meant to say is that there is no oracle client installed on the SP box, and I am not sure how to create that connection in a DVWP.
laura67 on "SharePoint database connection to oracle" http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/topic/sharepoint-database-connection-to-oracle#post-6074 Wed, 22 Apr 2009 17:49:20 +0000 laura67 6074@http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/
Sorry, I don't know anything at all about Oracle. No, you would never want to "install Oracle" on the same server as SharePoint. I hope nobody would do this.
The only thing I know to tell you is to try to create a connection to Oracle in a Data View Web Part.

Laura
jaxkookie on "SharePoint database connection to oracle" http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/topic/sharepoint-database-connection-to-oracle#post-6072 Wed, 22 Apr 2009 17:23:36 +0000 jaxkookie 6072@http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/
thanks Laura. What I have found is that my Co does not have oracle installed on the SP box and they do not support this. I still need to figure out a way to do this. Any ideas? I have a task scheduler with some macros, that pull data into access, then uploads into SP. Is there an easier way? I do not have MOSS. Is there a way to write script to populate a datasheet view in stead of an asp.net data table?
laura67 on "SharePoint database connection to oracle" http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/topic/sharepoint-database-connection-to-oracle#post-6056 Wed, 22 Apr 2009 12:22:35 +0000 laura67 6056@http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/
If you have MOSS Enterprise, you can utilize the BDC (Business Data Catalog) to connect to sources like that. Sometimes the data is just a bit too much for the DVWP.

Laura Rogers
http://spinsiders.com/laurar
jaxkookie on "SharePoint database connection to oracle" http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/topic/sharepoint-database-connection-to-oracle#post-6037 Tue, 21 Apr 2009 16:59:33 +0000 jaxkookie 6037@http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/
I have been trying to create a new database connection to our learning management system for some regular reports that are run. I figured if I can get the data into a list then users can sort and filter their own data, no need to run the report. I can not find a lot of data on this. What I have read is that this may be a bug for the oracle connection. I have my connection string, but when I add it I get an error. I modified this string several times and get a different error each time, the erro advises me to check my query something with the format.

Can this be done? What is the easiest way to grab data from oracle and display it in SP?
