I have been tasked with making our Sharepoint site 'more fun' by creating some form of Looky Likey feature.

You know the kind of thing...a photo of someone in your office and a photo of someone famous who looks disturbingly similar.

I'm having some trouble getting my head around the best way to implement this, so I'm putting it out there, hoping you're all a bunch of smarties that can give me an answer!

I'd like people to be able to submit their ideas for approval within the site. I'd like photos to be displayed side-by-side. I'd quite like the idea of comments to be allowed. Would a discussion board work for this?

Any ideas, suggestions, critisms, questions would be welcomed. I know this isn't a typical use of Sharepoint, but I figured there might be a way to do this.

    Thanks

I like this idea- sounds like a fun use of SharePoint.

I planted a few "funny" hidden links (Easter egg-type) and gave prizes to the first people who found them. At least it got people moving to the sites and actually involved.

    That's a good idea.

We're trying to drive traffic to the site to get more involvement, but the promise of documents, lists, and calendar items doesn't appeal to everyone!! ;o)

At the moment, we have a couple of 'mini surveys' which seem fairly popular and allow us to gather a bit of feedback too, but this is purely a bit of fun. I just want to be able to implement it in a fairly neat way if I can!

Okay, so most unsophisticated way so far would simply be to have people email in their suggestions which a site manager then uploads into a Picture Library, and then maybe starts a thread on a Discussion Board.

Taking that as the basis, we now need to improve!

  6. Lori Garcia gave a great talk at the SharePoint Conference in Seattle last year. She did five things that dramatically increased traffic to the internal site.

    1) Analyze your server logs and see why people are going to external sites. She found that a huge contingent of people were looking at Yahoo to see how the company stock was doing. Once she put a stock magnet on the front of the internal site, that surfing stopped.

    2) A second thing she discovered was that people were going to Weather.com because the weather changes every 5 minutes in Oklahoma. Voila... end of weather surfing when she put a weather magnet on the site.

    3) She implemented a "Quote of the Day" contributed by members of the company. You know how that goes over... everyone was checking to see if their's was the quote.

    4) Ask the CEO. She setup a Q&A board where the CEO would answer a question a week. Extend that to the upper management team, and you could have a "Carl says..." Q&A every day, as long as your CEO is named Carl.

I forgot the 5th one, but that should get your brain in gear.

    I hope the 5th one wasn't...

    5) Create a looky-likey submission and display solution to keep your visitors coming back for more! Here's how...

    ;o)

I really like those suggestions though, especially No. 4) That's a great one for creating a bit of transparency between the upper management team and the rest of us on the shop floor! I'll definite be looking into that one some more.

    Thanks for those :o)
