I create a list on a site on MOSS. However, I would like to add that same list to a variety of other sites as a webpart. How do I go about doing that? I dont see the web part available. thanks

First you'll need to save the list as a template. To do this, click on your list, then click on Settings, List Settings. Click the Save List as Template link from the Permissions and management section. Fill out the appropriate information and be sure to check the Include Content checkbox and click OK.
On the next page, you'll see a link to go to the list template gallery, click that link. On the list template page, click the name of the list you just saved and select Save. Save the file to your desktop.
Go to a site where you would like to place the list. Click Site Actions, Site Settings. Click on the list templates link. Click Upload. Navigate to the file you saved to your desktop. Click OK to upload the file. Now create a new list based off this template.
last step is to put the new list on the page. Click Site Actions, Edit page. Click a web part zone where you'd like to place the list. The list will show in the Lists and Libraries section. Click the checkbox beside it and click Add. Move the web part as desired and click Exit Edit Mode.

I want to maintain the info in one list and it apply to all the sites with this web part. Is that possible?

Edit, misread your response. You want the list to contain data and feed it to other site collections?
If that's the case, use the RSS feed of the list and use an RSS viewer web part on other pages to fetch the content.

Or, if all the sites that you want to display it in are in the same site collection, you can make a data view web part out of the list in SPD.
Just start by creating the DVWP on a blank web part page. Then, export the web part, and then import it on all of the other sites where you want it to be displayed.Laura Rogers

Laura - That's a common request. In all of your spare time, can you get some screenshots and a walkthrough, and I might turn it into a screencast. -- Mark

yes if you could provide screenshots that would be very helpful. thanks!

jlschu1,
Another option is to use the script that Christophe developed and put it in a CEWP which then allows you to display a list from any other site. No need for SPD. I have used this myself and it has been a good solution.

Hope this helps,

Mark and Laura - wondering if this ever turned into a screencast?

Jen - Nope, wasn't done. However, Laura and I are working on a series of DVWP live online workshops and this seems like a natural fit. -- Mark

Yes, we'll definitely cover this concept in our workshops. You'll learn SO much!
