All Word documents in library open in Reading Layout

We are running MOSS 2007 and Office 2003. We're finding that all Word documents in document libraries open in Word's reading layout view, regardless of the view the document was in when it was saved. It doesn't seem like a big deal because the user can easily switch to the Print layout or Normal view, but heavily formatted documents with headers and footers and images look awful when opened in Reading layout.

The strange thing is that it seems to only affect the document when you open it from within the document library. If you click a link (on a site's homepage, for example) that points directly to a document in a library, it opens normally.

I know you can prevent documents from opening in Reading layout by going to Tools > Options > General tab in Word and uncheck Allow starting in Reading Layout, but it seems silly to make all users do this when it appears that SharePoint has something to do with it.

  2. Clicking a link starts to download the document. Clicking in the document library fires javascript code that does things like check for the need to check out before you start the download (which I think happens because of an ActiveX control talking to the client app).

The problem is most likely Office 2003--not all of the current functionality was available then, 2007 is much better. That being said, I don't know if you can change the behavior easily--I don't have Office 2003 to test with.

  3. Maybe this is something that can be customized via group policy, but I'm almost positive that it can't be done through SharePoint. It's on the client side.
