We have an annual project with the same tasks that need to be accomplished each year - basically, a check list of things that need to be done by specific individuals. How can I create those tasks one time and have them carry-over as new tasks each year? Or a simple checklist would work well too. I need to track the fields Item, Target date, Completion date, Assigned to and Category.

  2. As with everything in SharePoint, there are quite a few options available.

Task items are not generally ideal for the idea of recurring events. Tasks are usually thought of as having a single beginning and a single ending. You might consider using standard calendar items for this type of event. You can customize the calendar list with your metadata and set the fields to be required if you so desire.

Assuming that these annual projects are actually separate projects and not on-going tasks, I might also suggest creating a site that is preconfigured for your annual project - including all the doc libraries, calendars and lists that you might use to track a project. This would include a task list with the specific tasks required. Then save this site as a site template with content. This will save your list items with the template. You have a 10 MB file size limit for the template, but if you're not including documents you should be fine. Then create a new site from your template every time you need a new project of this type.

You could also create a custom SPD workflow that fires "on change" and is keyed to the "status" of a task. When the status = completed then have the workflow create a new list item in your task list. You can configure variables within the workflow to contain the data to enter into the specific fields, or use the workflow to prompt the user for data.

Just some ideas. I am sure others may have their own opinions.
