I am having an issue with the Content Types Column YET or AGAIN. Here are some questions I have about the Column itself where it appears as part of the meta data about a document.
1. The only place I can actually see the column is in a view.
2. How is the content of that column determinded?
Here is the way I created my 4 content types and templates for those content types: (keep in mind that all of the items below are on the SAME SITE COLLECTION)
1. The documents were created outside of SharePoint in Office 2007. They are either Word (.docx) or Excel (.xlsx) documents.
2. I converted those documents to the template format in Office 2007. So they were saved to a corporate drive as Word (.dotx) or Excel (.xltx) documents.
3. I created a "Document Management Center (DMC)" subsite which is a subsite of our top-most Information Systems site.
4. On that DMC subsite I created a "Templates for DMC" Library.
5. I uploaded the templates created in step 2 above. There was no option to give it a specific Content Type. So they are of Content Type "Document"
6. I then went to the top-most level of our Information Systems site and went to Site Settings>Site Content Types and created my 4 content types. One for each of the 4 templates I just uploaded. The Content Types have a Template option in the Advanced Settings. Each of the 4 content types are joined here with their corresponding template for the "Templates for DMC" Library.
7. Then I created a new library at the same level as the "Templates for DMC". This library was to be saved as a template for users in the IS Site Collection to add to their project sites.
8. I attached my 4 content types to that library and eliminated the default "Document" content type. I only want documents of these content sites to reside in this library. All 4 of the content types have the same meta data columns.
9. It works great in that they select the content type from the new menu, complete the document and save it directly into the library...but....
10. It is attaching the same content type to all documents!! AND there is no place that I see the ability to change that content type.
In a previous "Stump the Panel" called "Creating and editing library templates" you answered with 2 replies that seem to have bearing on this issue. Your first reply there, where you say; "...you need to have the template typed to the same Content it is the template for..."
You go on to mention that this "sound wierd" and it does :) But your next paragraph put lost me altogether. It says; "Any data you tag unto the document template using the Word Content Controls (Insert>QuickParts>Document Properties) needs to be done while the document has the target Content Type, Otherwise your tags will not match the internal name of the fields in SharePoint."
Although the firt comment was wierd, this last one totally lost me in a very dark forest! I have no idea what you are talking about.
So, this leads me to two specific questions:
A. How do I attach the content type to a template? I know how to attach a template to a content type but not the reverse. Where does that fit in my 10 steps above?
B. Can you pleas explain what you mean by the second comment?
Thanks!
