The following is based on my limited knowledge so don't laugh if you think I'm an idiot and I should have known about this ;)

One of the great things about the CQWB is it's ability to show parts of lists and libraries from other sites. One of it's drawbacks is it's a bugger to format.

Using Sharepoint Designer you can create a dataview webpart to also connect to a list which is much easier to format. The problem I had was you could only use it in the site it was created in.

    Not any more!

Today I read a tip. Rather than connecting the dataview to a list on the site you are connected to, goto a different site and use the 'connect to another library' to make the list available to that site.

Now after you export the webpart it works on anysite!

  2. Only in that site collection, though. It won't work in other site collections. That's where the limitation is. ;-)

  3. Christophe from pathtosharepoint.wordpress.com created a script to be able to view a list from any other site with in SharePoint. It allows you to setup the view you want in the list and then take the list view link and add it to the script and now you can see that list in another site. Great thing about it is that you can show any of the fields. Just add the script to a CEWP.

Here is a link to his post: http://pathtosharepoint.wordpress.com/2009/01/22/a-simple-method-to-display-a-list-in-another-site/

I have a sample up on my site: http://www.bitsofsharepoint.com/ExamplePoint/Site/ListOnAnySite.aspx
