I am very new to Sharepoint, and it's possible I made a mistake that will force me to start the [sigh] page creation all over again. But hoping someone can help me out.

I created a nice NEWFORM.aspx with a List. This works pretty good. Then...I saved it as EDITFORM_DF.aspx, and added a few more columns for the "Approval" person to fill it after the end user submitted the new form.

Now I can bring up the EDITFORM_DF, add some data, but when I click on the Save button, it gives the error "The data source failed to execute the Update Command".

Is there any way to fix this?

I'm not sure of your process for creating this custom form. Typically you create the list first then copy the new/edit forms. In the copy, remove the generated form and replace it with the form in SPD's drop down menu.

Once it works, you direct the list to use the customized form.

The caveat to this process--it's not a great one. Changes to the list do not get reflected in your form. A lot of people who start down this path look for alternatives, like hiding form fields from certain groups, rather than creating custom forms.

But there's no better way to learn than to make mistakes!

    deefish,
there could be a plethora of issues going on here but in my experience with this problem i had to adjust column types to accept appropriate data. I blog about it here: http://chiqnlips.blogspot.com/2009/03/data-source-control-failed-to-execute.html
