I have a main site that contains a Project Tasks list. I have created three subsites within the parent. I want to be able to add the Project task list to each of the subsites.

  2. You can do that using SharePoint designer, from the sub-site level. In the Data Source Library, at the very bottom of the pane, click "Connect to another library".
Type a display name, like the name of the main site, and for location, just put the site's URL (not the full url to the tasks list). Click OK, and click OK.
Now, you'll see that the last section in your data source library has the name of the subsite, from which point you can create a data view web part from the tasks list you need, and that same DVWP can be exported, and then imported to the other sites it needs to be displayed on. For more about DVWP's, see my blog.

Is there a way to do this without SharePoint Designer? Unfortunately we do not have access to SharePoint Designer here at work.

Also we are currently using SharePoint Service 3.0 if that makes any difference.
