Link to a file on a file share (file://) from a document library

    I have a need to link to documents on a file share from a document library. Using the link to document content type will not work because it checks that the URL string starts with http: or https:.     This solution requires changing a file it the _layout folder which would effect all other site collections. I just know there has to be a way to accomplish this using content types and I would be for ever grateful if you would post a solution!
