Is it possible to have workflows reference reference other lists (or SP groups?) to assign work in this fashion? If I have three users, Al, Bill and Charlie, I would want Al to process the first item saved to a list, Bill the next, and Charlie the third, with the fourth item being assigned to Al, and so on. I've looked through SPD help, various MS resources and Experts Exchange, but nothing comes close to what I've described.

The only thing close that I've found here is http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/topic/looping-in-a-workflow, but that seems to have dropped off the radar some time ago.

    regards,

  2. Just an idea... maybe if you can have the WF update a list of these people with a "count" then pick the next person based on the MIN(count). I really don't know if it's possible, just throwing out a suggestion for the logic.

That's an interesting idea, but consider:
A new employee, Doug, comes in to the process a few cycles after A,B and C. Doug will be assigned every new item until he reaches parity with the other employees.

I really wish it were possible to calculate on an entire list during a workflow step :|

  4. That might be over developing this solution. We have the option of setting Doug's "Task count" to whatever we want. It's just list data afterall.

Also, you can choose to use a date instead. This means that if Mary was assigned a WF Task on 1/1, Jerry on 1/3 and Marv on 1/8, Mary gets the next one.

Thanks for sticking with me, AutoSponge! :D

You mentioned previously about using MIN(count) on the approvers list, and I'm not sure I see how to add a function to a lookup in SPD's workflow designer. It's not an action, and the field selector goes inactive when I select items from the approvers list.

This has been a pretty intriguing experience so far.

  6. If you have MOSS, check the Translation Library. It has this type of functionality built in, so it might be a starting point. -- Mark

Mark- can you elaborate? What is specific to the Translation Library that would require such a function? I can see uses for it.

  8. jdporter,
You might want to take a look at this:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointdesigner/HA102564171033.aspx

It's the best site that I've found with a really good real world example of some pretty complex workflows. Everything I know about SPD workflows, I learned here.
