Our site search quite working when our site was upgraded to wss v3. According to our mis department when our site was upgraded (by an outside company) they did not upgrade us correctly. They are telling me that in previous versions of sharepoint each sub site was kept in a seriate sql database and in version 3 all data is kept in one database. And because our site was not converted to one database at the time it was upgraded to version 3 we are out of luck and must recreate our sites. Does this sound correct?

We just upgraded from SPS to MOSS and wish I remembered our DB structure. In WSS/MOSS, site collections are rolled into one or many content databases depending on the configuration of your environment. Each content database can hold many site
    collections.

The most likely explaination is the Search Settings need to be reconfigured since your migration. This can be done in the Shared Services section of Central Administration.
