Sort Problem in Web Part

In my document library, I have 8 items; 6 of the items are folders (#s 3-8) and 2 are Word documents (#s 1 & 2). They are named thusly:
    1 - Agenda
    2 - Action Items
    3 - Committee Reports
    ...
    8 - Other Business

1st attempt: I go to Modify Shared Web Part -> Edit the Current View, and sort by Name (linked to document); I have no second sort. The result is a sort first by Type (showing all the folders first) and then by Name.

2nd attempt I sort first by Type (descending so that the Word documents list first) and then by Name. The result is the same as first attempt's result. (No change!)

3rd attempt, I created a new column called Sort Order. But the new column only applies to the Word documents, not the folders, so that's not a solution either.

What am I missing? (The 1st attempt solution worked just fine in Sharepoint 2.)

    Appreciate your help!

This is why I try not to use folders in document libraries. I create a custom column to classify the type of document then use views to display the appropriate files.

Thanks, Eric, that's just what I needed to hear! I deleted the folders, created a custom column, grouped by the custom column, and now I have an even better look than I did in Sharepoint 2!

  4. Rita - In general, when you analyze an existing folder hierachy, it's a safe bet that those folders can be flattened out and the concepts of those folders turned into columns. This especially holds true for nested folders. Ruven Gotz posted an article on this yesterday: http://www.endusersharepoint.com/?p=1340
