Working documents

I would really appreciate some ideas on this issue :

We have had a rule so far that only completed documents are to be uploaded onto the intranet so that there is no confusion. After this, minor changes can be tracked with versioning.
However, if a person is working on a report and hasn't uploaded it yet, there is sometimes a need for others to access the unfinished document if they are away.

So we were thinking of creating a "Working Documents" document library for work in progress, or alternatively telling people to create a Document Workspace document library on their MySites, which is available to the relevant staff and where all their incomplete documents can be housed until they are ready to be uploaded into the correct document libraries.
Is there perhaps a better solution to this issue, or if not, which of the two solutions would be the best?

Admittedly, I am a newbie to SharePoint but if this were my site only a Document Workspace would be considered. All my reading says DW is perfect for collaborating on a document or a set of documents. Once completed, the final version is moved to the Document Library and the workspace deleted. Or 'cleaned up' for the next use.

Unless their My Site space has been allocated enough room, create the Document Workspace under the group doing the work. Some work I've seen thus far, the My Site storage allocation would not be enough.

Am anxious though to see if the 'old heads' agree.

  3. If you simply turn on content approval for the doc library, then while the document is being worked on, the users can still access the non-draft version of it. That way, after the person is finished, and the doc gets "approved", then that is the version that the users will see on the site.
