How to replace the Learning Management System with SharePoint
One of the main reasons I chose to dedicate so much of my professional time on SharePoint is because it gave me the possibility to own the very site where I post and work. As a knowledge manager and trainer I have the constant need to keep materials updated. I also need to keep my end user engaged. Working within the constraints of enterprise learning and publishing structures means you have to send materials out to teams that then in turn publish the materials out, not always swiftly.

A Funny thing happened on the way to the gym…
Two things really. The first is that SharePoint Designer became free and all the ideas, projects and requests that had been labeled “I’ll do them when they spend the $” were all green lighted. If you have read my earlier posts and case study you’ll know that I have had a fair amount of time in front of people selling MOSS. In each group there are always a few or so the saying goes, but in this case they weren’t what you’re thinking. They were the minority, the ones who see the value and begin to research and think along side as you move forward. Needless to say the four key elements that are recurring eyebrow raisers are: Branding, Versioning, Security, and Workflows.

How many of the Web Part things should I put up?
On my training site I use Web parts in the more traditional home page concept. Announcements for greeting content, Web content editor that holds a few cut and pasted scripted things like world clocks and tag clouds representing popular searches, then there is a links section, etc. Boilerplate stuff to establish that familiar home page web site feel.

How to be Your SharePoint Site’s Cutman
A similar situation can come up in SharePoint as well. What happens if you didn’t do your Information Architecture work? Didn’t set up groups, content types, or columns?
You may not have had the experience or the tools (planning spreadsheet). You didn’t even know that content came in types
In the case of swelling libraries, you’ll need to centralize all you content so you can see it. Go to the Library/Actions/Export to spreadsheet. There you will be able to see if and what columns and content types you need to add

Getting Buy in From End Users
First of all I would start out with the foundation of my site i.e., the Planning Spread sheet as the seed to your site and roll out strategy. This file will be the answer to keep your support materials from growing and morphing into the monster movie marathon of huge user guides and FAQs.
