Mind Maps and SharePoint
It looks like I’m not the only one who thinks Mind Maps are useful when talking about SharePoint.
Every one of my presentations begins with an expandable/contractable map, showing the various pieces of the presentation along with embedded notes and links on each subject. Asif has started to display his “Knowledge Maps” using the new Mind Manager export that allows for PDF and Flash presentations. This is critical when presenting to a virtual audience because most people won’t have the appropriate viewer when trying to view the maps.
Mind Maps are so critical to the way that I design and manage ideas, I’m considering creating a short workshop on how to build site hierarchies using Mind Manager as the planning tool. Would I have any takers?
If you are interested in Mind Maps and what they can do for your site planning, leave me a quick comment. I’m going to be giving a live, online workshop, “Simple Site Planning: Get It Right the First Time!” next week and this just might be what’s needed as the followup to that presentation.
Mindmaps are an important tool for SharePoint design and I think a tutorial on how you use them would be a great value add.
I have been using MindMaps for quite a few years and also find them an indispensable tool. A tutorial would be most welcome.
See http://www.wssdemo.com/Pages/mindmanager.aspx
for how to render a map in the content editor web part. It is a bit of a shame that Mindjet decided to go it alone with their own collaboration server product. The early SharePoint integration with v6 was looking good.
A very good idea. Can’t wait for it.
Mark, I find the mindmaps great for communicating conceptual ideas and draw them out all the time – they haven’t quite made it into my electronic toolkit yet – I’d surely take up your training session rather than invest lord knows how long “working out the best way” myself!
Another demo, creating a map directly from a SharePoint List http://www.wssdemo.com/Pages/mindmanager2.aspx
I agree that mindmaps are a useful tool. I use them when creating a taxonomy for new sites.
Ryan – I like that word, ‘taxonomy’. Do you have time to document what you’ve done and lay out a process for creating a taxonomy with a mind map? I would be willing to post it as an article if you do. — Mark
I would love to see how mindmapping could be used in SharePoint, with specifics around how to accomplish that. I would also be interested in creating a taxonomy within SharePoint without significant customization.
Chuckling away as this post brings back memories. I used to do my SharePoint presentation prep as mind maps back in my MS days :-)
We use SharePoint as a collaboration
tool and I would like to upload my mind maps and have all my linked documents posted on our SharePoint site. Is anyone doing this?
