No assembly required: Color Code your SharePoint Calendars

Christophe Humbert at Path to SharePoint has provided us with a blueprint on how to color code a SharePoint calendar without having to deploy a feature or hack any web pages. Check out the demo screencast below to see an example in action.

If you like what you see, we’ve got a live online hands-on workshop today, at 1:00pm EST, that will get you all the resources you need, a sandbox for playing around and hands-on instructions for implementing the solution on your site.

If you are a do-it-yourselfer… head over to Path to SharePoint and start digging.

Sure, go ahead and embed this screencast on your site

This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Thanks Mark! One question…can you please provide the ColorCode formula? I tried to copy from the screen cast, but I must be missing something. Thanks again!

  2. Randy – That’s what the 1:00pm workshop was for! The formulas are available on Christophe’s site, ready for cut and paste. I’ll be running the workshop again soon because I think it’s a great solution. — Mark

I wish I had been able to attend this today, I had a conflict because this is definitely something I’d like to do. I can’t quite figure out the formula for the Calculated Column (ColorCode), would you be willing to share that formula?

I tried Cristophe’s site and have failed to get it right.

  4. Colleen Parker says:

Disregard my post, I should have read the one above where you said you’d be holding the workshop again. I didn’t find on Christophe’s site the solution you showed with the color-coding based on event type and that’s like where I’m stuck.

I get your RSS feed, so I’ll look for the next time this is shown in a workshop.

    Thanks Mark!

  5. Randy says:

I’m in the same boat Colleen.

  6. Randy and Colleen,

I’m going to run this again VERY soon. I think a lot of people were off for the week, so plan on seeing it again within the next two weeks.

    Regards,
    Mark

You’re always right on time with your very helpful information. Thank You!

Okay this is exactly the solution we have been looking for sadly being in the UK means we have missed tbe webcast. I found the javascript example but cannot get the Calculated column to work – when I make an appointment it shows but not in colour and when I edit the appointment I don’t see an example of the colour I see the html…here is the code I am using – any feedback welcome and thanks in advance for reading this:

    =”"&Title&”"

  9. Scott – I don’t see any conditional calculation in your formula. What are you testing against? — Mark

  10. Juan says:

I’m also getting the same issue as Scott. Here is the formula I entered into the calculated field:

    =”"&Title&”"

I had a fourth activity type (Training) and had to make up a color code, which is probably incorrect, but it’s not one of the choices I’ve used in my tests. Any instructions on color codes would also be helpful.

  11. Juan says:

It looks like there’s an issue with formulas being displayed correctly in these forms. Here is the formula(minus the initial equals sign), hopefully it’ll display correctly:

    “”&Title&”"

    Interesting to read the reactions…

Actually my solution has been around for a while, and several bloggers have relayed it in dedicated articles, including Mike Gannotti, the Microsoft team, and Mark Miller himself in previous posts.

So why suddently so much interest? Is it the magic touch of Mark’s video?

To readers who are reporting issues: unfortunately your formulas are not rendering in the comments. Here are some links that are not specific to calendars but may help:
