New Article Series: Laura Rogers on Data View Web Part Basics

A note from Mark Miller: I’m very pleased to announce that Laura Rogers has agreed to write a series of articles on the Data View Web Part, giving beginning SharePoint Designer users the steps necessary to implement one of the most powerful solutions in the platform. Laura is a moderator on Stump the Panel and delivers live online workshops on Office integration with SharePoint, Workflow with SPD, and The Data View Web Part.

Her series of articles on the Data View Web Part will be supplemented with live online workshops, the first of which is on Friday, May 15th: Getting Started w/ the Data View Web Part.

Introduction

Welcome to my new series of articles on the SharePoint 2007 data view web part (DVWP).  These web parts can only be created using SharePoint Designer (SPD).  Now that SharePoint Designer 2007 is free, this opens the door to a lot more people being able to create these web parts, widening the intended audience for these articles.

In my DVWP articles, I will start off with some fundamentals about working with these web parts.  Once these basics have been covered, each of subsequent my articles will assume that the readers have read these original prerequisites (the first article).  These basics will frequently be referenced as we go along, with information such as quirks and nuances in inserting a DVWP.

What is this DVWP stuff all about?

What are these new DVWP articles all about?  Well, various things.  Usually I get ideas for blogs and articles that I write, from questions that people ask on forums.  Some of my articles will actually be combinations or mutations of several different business solutions.  These articles will contain easy to understand, step-by-step instructions.  Most of them will pertain to WSS (Windows SharePoint Services) implementations, and every now and then, there will be some that pertain to MOSS only.

Who is the target audience?  SharePoint site managers and site collection managers.  I am not a developer, and you need not know any code to implement my solutions.   You also will not need Central Admin or “12 hive” access on the server, either.

The first article in the series is a walk through of the SPD environment for the DVWP. Stay tuned…
