2 Minute Screencast: Embed a clickable map into your SharePoint page

I had a request this week from Murray Coble asking if it was possible to embed a clickable map of the United States into a SharePoint site. It sounded like a quick, fun project, so I jumped over to the US Geographical Survey site and found a little topo map. It had image map coordinates attached, so I embedded it into a Content Editor Web Part.

The “official” name for this web part is the “Clickable Image Map” web part, if you must give it a title. You can download it from the Subscriber Only Archive if you are a Weekly Newsletter subscriber.

  1. Put the us_relief.jpg into a document library on your site.
  2. Place the Clickable Image Map web part on any page of your site.
  3. Open the web part in edit mode and change the source reference of the image to your library.

What? You expected more? That’s it! You can view how the map works in the screencast below.

You’ve now got a model for creating image maps and placing them on your SharePoint site. If you like what you see here, join me for the “SharePoint Charts and Graphs without Excel Services” live online workshop on July 24th. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Thank you so much for this! This article has been very helpful and I do plan to fully check out this site! I am new to SharePoint and the video, and instructions, were very clear and easy to follow. Thank you again!
