Compare and Sync Sites in SharePoint

ShareGateOne of the questions I get quite often is, “How do I move sites from dev to production?” When I was at SharePoint Conference 2009, I met a couple of guys from Montreal who had a small table but a big product in my eyes. You might remember me talking about ShareGate, a simple tool for comparing sites. No server installation, just a simple desktop client. They gave the compare tool away in hopes that people would purchase the sync tool.

I just received an email from Simon, one of the developers on the team, telling me they have released an updated sync tool, and lowered the price by 200 bucks.

Here’s his message, if you want to check out the new upgrade.

I want to tell you that we launched ShareGate 2009.1.2 including the synchronization module. We are offering a launch special offer at $395 instead of $595 until January 15th, 2010. I remembered that you said that your readers would appreciate to have some sort of rebate. We also offer a 15 days trial on the web site.

We are currently supporting most of the data structure synchronization with no server installation at all. In the next months, we will add support for content files, workflows, permissions and data. It would be really nice if you could make an announcement and overload our servers with your famous site!

So go ahead, overload the server. Simon and team would appreciate it. Really nice tool, guys.

I stopped by their booth and was very impressed. This is such a fundamental thing to be able to do in many scenarios, and they seem to have nailed it.

I think I may be missing the boat here, but the built-in stsadm tool has an export feature that will allow you to easily move sites from one to another. That’s with permissions intact too!

  3. sharegate is tool to merge differences from a source site to a destination site. If you need to transfer a complete site, stsadm is a good tool.

*In the next version of sharegate, you will be able to compare and sync permissions too.

Actually, I’ve just downloaded sharegate few days ago and I was able to sync my Permissions and Workflow.

    Great tool!
