You say “SharePoint”. I say “SharePint”. Jeff says “T-Shirt!”

Jeff Deverter from Rackspace has to have one of the best designed swag shirts that I’ve seen. For those who have been to a SharePoint event in the past, you’ve probably heard of “SharePint”, the unofficial gathering place for SharePoint after hours.

Jeff created a logo and t-shirt for the SharePint event at the Experts Conference going on right now in Los Angeles. He is thinking about ways to distribute them to the SharePoint community. Let’s see if we can help him out.

If you have a SharePoint user group, please leave the name of the usergroup, the group’s web site address, the number of people in the group and a contact name in the comments below. International addresses are fine.

The only request we have is that when you get the shirts, you must send Jeff a group photo with everyone wearing the shirt. Fair enough? I thought so.

Send your Thank You notes to [email protected].

  1. Hey Jeff, we’ll take some for our inaugural meeting up here at the Boston Area SharePoint Users Group on 5/12. Website at http://www.bostonsharepointug.org.

Unsure of how many actual attendees we will have, but, we have close to 50 registered for the event. If you want to send up a few extra for future SharePints, we’d be much obliged, especially since you’re hosting the site and a sponsor of the group and all :)

This isn’t cool… SharePint was intentionally started years ago with the goal of bringing people together with zero corporate sponsorship. It’s very disappointing to see someone trying to capitalize off something that was supposed to be 100% about community.

We only published three rules and two of them were no sponsorship.

    • Andrew – I’m not seeing any “sponsorship” here. Jeff has designed a nice logo for SharePint that has been extremely well received here at the Experts Conference. If your objection is that the RackSpace logo appears on the shirt, that’s worth discussion, but I think the idea was well executed and is still in the spirit in which SharePint was originally created. — Mark

The Rackspace logo, or any logo, is the issue. Rackspace is clearly trying to capitalize off a community thing as it is a prominant part of the design. It’s unfortunate.

We would love to get some SharePint love up here in Toronto, Canada. The Toronto SharePoint User Group typically has about 50 attendees for each monthly meeting.

We’re interested up here in Calgary. We have 35-40 people per meeting.

    What is the associated cost?

    Thanks!

    Jay. :)

  5. Looks like we’ve stirred up a nice one here! Lets start with the facts:

    Who designed the logo: Me
    Who put Rackspace There: Me
Was I trying to be a mean person – No

Was I trying to help get the Rackspace name out there as a leader in SharePoint hosting – of course; I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t. But no more than the company that stands at the bar at a SharePint event waving his corporate credit card.

I am happy to remove the Rackspace logo (http://www.rackspace.com) from future T-Shirt printing runs. I would also expect the community at large to stop accepting free pints from corporate companies at those same events.

I am a huge proponent of the greater SharePoint Community:

    - Rackspace gives away SharePoint sites (in some cases servers) to any SPUG
    - Rackspace gives away WSS Blog space to any SP Blogger who asks
    - I personally have been paying for the server space for EndUser SharePoint’s web space

Honestly I don’t see any difference between a business buying drinks at one of these events and what we have done with these shirts. But at the end of the day it doesn’t negate this post which was sent to me this morning:

    http://www.21apps.com/sharepint/perchance/

SharePint wasn’t Rackspace’s or my idea and I feel that we ought to honor the wishes of those that coined it. Future printings will not have the Rackspace logo on the shirt in a way that conveys that SharePint is a Rackspace sponsored event. I do feel that it is right for a company who is going to invest in the printing of T-Shirts to state that they sponsored the printing of those shirts.

I will also be making a digital copy of the logo (sans the Rackspace component) available to the community to use as they like.

Sorry for the firestorm this morning.

    Best-
    Jeff DeVerter

PS: We will have all these shirts with the Rackspace logo on it. Can we all agree that tossing the remainder of these would be counter productive and quite wasteful. I despise waste. We will still be making these available to any SPUG who requests them until we run out of this printing run.

Could we get some for the Mississauga SharePoint User Group Facebook page website still under construction. There are about 20-25 members in this user group.

    Thanks,

    Hey Jeff,
Baton Rouge is having it’s first SPUG meeting on May 5th. Hope we have enough time to get some shirts for the event. We have about 30 people registered right now. Hope to get 50 to come and watch Dux Raymond Sy speak and celebrate Cinco de Mayo, BRSPUG style!

IMHO I am not bothered in the least that Rackspace has added its logo to the shirt. Expecially since they have footed the bill to have them printed.

At the SharePint event I attended a corporate rep paid for dirnks, and therefore was free to tout his company. Just as I was free to ingnore it. I don’t see much difference here.

Jeff, if we had a user group in my area I would have no problem wearing your shirt. I think it is nicely done.

What a fantastic way to build the SP community and have some fun along the way. Love the logo ….
Our users group presently is within our organization only with our site being internal (hence cannot share). However, we are in the midst of create a new community based SPUG. Love to get my hands on a few T’s.

    Cheers
