SharePoint Bookshelf Organizer: Version .01

For those who have been following my series this week ( the link to show all the series articles is at the bottom ), I’ve created a short screencast to show you our first pass at the SharePoint Bookshelf Organizer. It’s still pretty primitive, but we’ve got the image mouseovers as described by Alexander, Dessie Lunsford helped create a framework for a five star rating system, and the kids are already asking to add more books, so I think we’ve got a homerun.

Take a look. If you like what you see, leave us a comment below. We’ll be working on this up to the minute before we go on at SharePoint Saturday Philly this weekend. Hope to see you there.

    Hi Mark,
What about using some Text to HTML magic with CSS sprites?
    http://www.itsalif.info/content/displaying-star-rating-using-css-sprites
Since you already have the Avg. rating value from 0 to 5 (you could modify it to have 1/2 stars),
you would ‘only’ have to create a calculated column like:

    =CONCATENATE("<span class='rating-static rating-",VALUE([Avg. Rating]*10)," '></span>")

and add the call to the CSS, image and Text to HTML script from a hidden CEWP pointing to your Scripting Resource Center.

I think Christophe had some things very similar going on with pie charts

    Mark,
The calculated column got cut off:

    =concatenate(”")

There may be some single/ double quote issues when copying & pasting…

    Hey Mark,

This is super cute, and what a great lesson for the kids. I was thinking why not add tagging as well, since you said the kids might choose (or not choose) to read a book based on the rating. Things like funny, scary, boring, hard, you get the idea. That way, they can sort by whatever type of book they might be in the mood to read.

Anyway, I love it. See you as SPSDC!!

    Mark,

The video doesn’t display for Firefox users.

    Mark,
Super ideas, as always! I especially like the fact that “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” is one of the books you display….that is my son’s favorite series. He read them to me a few weeks ago, and I love the series, too.Keep up the good work!
