The Closing of EndUserSharePoint.com – Long Live End User SharePoint

Mark Miller, Founder and Editor, EndUserSharePoint.comOn September 27, 2007 I published my first article on EndUserSharePoint.com (EUSP). Over 1800 articles and 14,000 comments have been published since then, not counting thousands of questions and responses on Stump the Panel, or the hundreds of events posted on the SharePoint Community Calendar. We also have the dubious honor of blocking over 100,000 spam comments in the past year.

I have the privilege of being recognized by the community as a SharePoint evangelist, speaking at numerous SharePoint Saturdays, national and international conferences, and producing hundreds of live online broadcasts. In the process, EndUserSharePoint.com has become one of the largest, SharePoint Community sites in the world. It is now time to move on…

This is the final article to be published on EndUserSharePoint.com.

As many of you know, Jeremy Thake, Joel Oleson and I have combined resources in a new site, NothingButSharePoint.com (NBSP). As of this article, everything from this point forward will be published exclusively on NBSP within the EndUserSharePoint area. Jeremy is managing the Developer area and Joel has the IT Pro area. Beginning in January, Richard Harbridge has a team who will start providing content for the Business users of SharePoint.

NothingButSharePoint.comThis is a major move for EndUserSharePoint.com. I do have some trepidation, of course. EUSP is known as an objective voice and champion for the site managers, power users and site collection administrators of SharePoint. We have steadfastly held to our mission of providing “No Geek Speak” for End Users. Why would I choose to move EUSP into a site with Developer and IT Pro content? Won’t that dilute the value of EndUserSharePoint? Dilution of brand is a tough one to reconcile. Is EUSP just going to become a silo within a larger site? Without sounding too much like a politician a week out from election day, the answer to that is “Yes” and “No”.

The audience and contributors for EndUserSharePoint.com have matured into an incredible community of Power Users, sharing tricks and traps, and developing presentation layer solutions that many people would never think of on their own. As the audience has matured, so have the needs of that audience. Instead of trying to straddle the line between Developer, IT Pro and End User, I decided to participate in Jeremy’s project so that we can build a much larger community for sharing ideas. You don’t want to jump back and forth between various applications on your desktop in order to get your job done. Why should it be necessary to jump around to a bunch of web sites to find SharePoint content if we can agree to aggregate community involvement, on all levels, in one place.

Jeremy, Richard, Joel and I want to reassure you that we are not going away as individuals, but combining to make something much larger. We plan on making NothingButSharePoint.com the largest, most useful, centrally located source of SharePoint community information in the world. The trick is, we can’t do it without you.

Community is built upon trust and participation. We hope to build on that foundation with you joining us not just as a reader, but as a contributor to a growing body of knowledge. We want your comments, we want your input, we want your experience. Together, we can continue to mature as a community, helping each other as we discover how to utilize SharePoint to solve real world business problems. Consider this your invitation. Please join us. Please participate in making NothingButSharePoint.com what you need it to be.

With that, I close this chapter of EndUserSharePoint.com. Thank you for what you’ve done and accomplished with us in a few short years. I look forward to publishing your new discoveries on NothingButSharePoint.com.

EndUserSharePoint.com is closed. Long live End User SharePoint.

  1. Ah, it’s quite sad actually. You built the most wonderful thing here.

Never mind, I’m sure NBSP will be a raging success.

Thank you so much for all the work you did on EUSP in the past. It’s certainly been my lifeline since day one.

Wishing you great success! Definitely staying glued to NBSP for future guidance.

    V…

    • It’s odd… it does feel kind of sad in a way. Natasha and I have been head down for the past few years and have only recently come to realize how valuable people perceive EUSP to be. If I didn’t think it was the right move, for the right reasons, I would not have agreed to join NBSP. But each day as NothingButSharePoint.com becomes more realized, I know it’s the right thing to do.

      Thanks for your well wishes.
      Mark

  2. Mark, you and Natasha have done a great job – such a great job that it is sad to see EUSP end. I wanted to see EUSP last a long time, and I suppose that it will live on by starting a new chapter via NBSP. Change is difficult, but when done well it allows progress & I know you, Jeremy, Richard and Joel will do it well – so I look forward to many years of NBSP articles.

On the other hand, it will probably take me a year to stop typing endusersharepoint.com into my browser!

    • > On the other hand, it will probably take me a year to stop typing endusersharepoint.com into my browser!

You and me both. I had to put a quick link in my navbar just to remind me. Going to be taking the EUSP ones out at the end of the day.

  3. Looking forward to the next phase, Mark. Thanks!

  4. Mark, what is happening with Stump the Panel? Right now the NBSP site points to http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/

Is this being rebranded soon, or will the link remain for a while?

  5. Graham Innes says:

So end-eth an era, onwards and upwards Mark. You’ve set your own bar with EUP which you now have to beat with NBSP lets hope it doesnt become an   :-)

Good luck and *click* I just add a new favourite.

  6. Rita says:

Maybe I’m missing it…but I I just cannot find the forums. I really liked the ask a question and let the experts and other users answer! I feel lost! :) I definitely used the site for research quite often. It was a great site. Sad to see it go…but hope I can figure out NBSP! I’m in need of some help! :)

  7. Christophe says:

Mark, are you closing the site, or will it still be accessible as read only? EUSP is a SharePoint Historic Landmark, it cannot just go away!

And how about reopening it from time to time, for special occasions?

Man, I’m already getting that nostalgic feeling…

    • Christophe – This site will remain because there are too many “conversations” going on through comment subscription, RSS feeds and other tracking items. That said, all new content will reside on NBSP, including phase 2 when we will move over the SharePoint Community Calendar and Stump the Panel. — Mark

  8. Guido says:

    Hi Mark,
I’m sad reading it. EUSP has been the first site I read every morning and in these years I found a lot of useful articles.
Well, I’m going to substitute the url of EUSP in my favorites with NBSP: better! I’m going to ADD the NBSP to my favorites ;-)
Thanks again for your GREAT job and I wish you a greta success
    Sincerly your
    Guido

  9. Jill says:

    Hi Mark,
Thank you for EUSP! It has been a wonderful ride. I’ve valued EUSP for a long time now and look with optimism to the new NBSP. Closing EUSP may be difficult, like you are leaving something behind, but you are brave to reach out and engage in change which is what so much of life is about…possibilities. So in closing hats off to everyone involved in EUSP!. Long live possibilities!

  10. BrianC says:

I find it a bit ironic that my introduction to Mark Miller and EndUserSharePoint was via a blog posting titled “I will never be Joel Oleson”. And now he’s one of your partners.

    • Yes, Joel and I laugh about that one. I actually use that as my closing statement in the “Build a Community in SharePoint” presentation. It’s wonderful how things have come full circle, isn’t it? — Mark

  11. Rene says:

Will we need to sign up again on the new site to newsletters, Stump the Panel etc…

  12. Alex says:

    Hi Mark and Team,
Thanks for everything, will keep following but my favourites bar just doesn’t look the same, EUSP has sat there for over 2 years.
    Cheers
    Alex

  13. Keith Withey says:

Best of luck! As a SP pro I thinks its a great idea. I usually find myself jumping between sites and this makes a lot of sense. I always refer my power users to your site and love the “out of the box” thinking. Looking forward to another top quality effort.

  14. George W says:

You’ve done a terrific job, as I have always tried to remindl you. Thanks for everything and I look forward to the new site.

  15. Chris 54 says:

You can’t go! All the plants are gonna die!

  16. Pyrroc says:

    Mark,

The FeedBurner link on your new site does not work.

  17. Matt B. says:

    Mark,
This site has single-handedly moved me up the ranks within the SharePoint realm. I’ve enjoyed reading/implementing/troubleshooting all of the solutions provided on this blog. Moving all 3 tiers into one conglomerate site does feel natural. It’s what is needed and I applaud everyones’ efforts in making it happen.

Thanks for letting me leave my tiny mark,
    Matt

  18. Josh D says:

Thank you for all your great work on EUSP. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent reading the posts and how many problems they’ve solved for us; it’s been a great resource for a previously underserved community. See you at NBSP!

    Dear
I had set unique permission for one sub site in my sharepoint server 2007.
I gave different permissions for users.
Unfortunately I inherited permissions from parent site.
    All unique permissions are lost.

I want to see the previous unique permission and restore to it.

I already enable Editing users and permissions in Configure Audit Settings.
I can see the report in View Auditing Reports – Security settings.
But this excel file contain only code like
    1073741924170849E1DB.

How can i view the previous permission of each user ?

I’m looking forward to the new site. It’s kinda sad in a way, sort of like watching your kids graduate from high school. This site has definitely helped me in my Sharepoint projects . I still remember trying to figure out how to create a thumbnail picture library and found this site with a step by step guide with pictures! Thanks!

  21. Sarah Haase says:

Even when change comes for all the right reasons, it can still bring some sadness. Am looking forward to learning/growing with NBSP, but will still miss EUSP and what it meant for all us non-developers!

  22. Marcel says:

For me it is a great idea to combined resources in a new site. Until today I was using several websites to get the information, ideas and code snipped I need actually, depending on the current project. Now there is the great opportunity to get this information from one site.
